Wheelchair lifts are designed to ensure practical access solutions for individuals with physical disabilities that pose challenges to them when it comes to climbing stairs. These are truly more cost-effective alternatives than elevators, and nowadays many find them useful as these facilitate the movement of people making it easy, fast, and convenient.

Whether for residential or commercial applications, wheelchair lifts find many practical uses. This line of lifts usually comes in two operating modes; hydraulic and electric. While the hydraulic model uses hydraulics for increased lift performance, the electric wheel chair lifts come with battery back-up. If necessary, you can install automatic door openers or telephone jacks in electronic lifts. When compared to hydraulic wheelchair stair lifts, the electric models are cheaper.

All the branded wheelchair stair lifts combine an outstanding blend of quality, comfort, and durability. To meet the customers? needs, wheel chair stair lifts come with a greater selection of options in style, color, size, function, and feature. Among the different models of wheelchair lifts, the most popular are inclined platform lifts; vertical platform lifts; and portable wheel chair lifts.

Each wheelchair stair lift has its own set of unique features and specifications. Available in permanent and portable models, the vertical wheel chair lifts are safest, quietest, and most durable. Inclined platform lifts are mainly designed to travel up the stairways. These can be used on straight stairways and curved stairways. The added advantage of this model is that it can be wall mounted or tower-mounted to the staircase.

Portable vertical lifts are the most affordable solution, and can be used on various stairways. Portable lifts are simple to set up and operate, and provide the mobility and access that you need. Many wheel chair stair lift models have multiple control stations, user-friendly controls and come with many safety features such as under-platform sensors, handrail, emergency stop switch, anti-slip flooring, and more.

Today, a number of options are available to search for wheel chair stair lifts. You can approach online stores or retail stores to shop for any model of vertical lifts. A number of manufacturers offer a wide selection of wheel chair lifts for every purpose ? and these products meet high standards of quality and reliability. Depending on the varying structures, features and manufacturer, the price of the wheelchair lifts will vary accordingly. Based on your individual needs and budgetary requirements, you need to make a choice wisely.

Wheelchair ramps can be permanent, semi-permanent or portable. The ramp should be able to accommodate both small and big wheelchairs and have a good load bearing capacity. Customized vehicle ramps can be built to suit to the vehicle you are using.

For wheelchair users, a common issue is climbing platforms and steps while being seated in the wheelchair. At your home, a concrete ramp made at the entrance of your home is sufficient. But when you want to step inside or outside of your car or when you are in another building, you will have to face some problems. An alternative option is to carry a portable ramp which can be placed at varying heights including steps, along which your wheelchair can be moved upwards and downwards easily.

Wheelchair ramps can be permanent, semi-permanent or portable. Constructing a ramp using concrete is ideal for permanent needs. Special care should be taken on deciding the level of inclination that should be given to these concrete ramps. A steep ramp is difficult to climb and poses the threat of wheelchair being tipped backwards. The accepted inclination level is 1:12 (i.e., for every 1 m height, the length of the ramp should be 12 m).

For portable ramps, the main concerns include the material used for the construction of the ramp, how durable the material is, and how much weight it can bear without deformation. Commonly used materials include aluminum, steel and wood. For apartments and hospitals deciding to put up a wheelchair ramp, the factors to be considered are the different types of wheelchairs with varying width between the wheels and having different weight capacities. The ramp should be able to accommodate both small and big wheelchairs and have a good load bearing capacity.

Specifically designed ramps for vehicle entry are also available. Both permanent and temporary models can be bought. Customized vehicle ramps can be built to suit to the vehicle you are using.

With a number of companies offering a wide range of wheelchair ramps, the best option is to check various ramps to find one which matches with your wheelchair. The lighter the ramp, the easier it is to carry.? The trial and error method of checking different types of ramps will eventually get you the right ramp suited to your needs.

Wheelchair lifts provide the physically disabled easy access to different areas in their home or place of business. They are flexible and can be easily installed inside or outside your home.

Wheelchair lifts are a blessing to the physically disabled and the aged. Wheelchair lifts are used to lift people in a wheelchair to a flight of steps or to a lower plane. Earlier, the wheelchairs had to be moved or lifted manually. With the advent of the wheelchair lift, the awkward process of lifting a wheelchair to a higher plane or a vehicle can be avoided. Electric and hydraulic wheelchair lifts are available for home use now.

Wheelchair lifts provide the physically disabled easy access to different areas in their home or place of business. The operations of these wheelchair lifts are simple and customizable to suit your specific needs. The lowering, raising, folding and unfolding can be done automatically with the help of a switch. Hydraulic wheelchair lifts work even during power failure, but are difficult to maintain. But the electric wheelchair lifts are easy to maintain and come with battery back-up to function uninterruptedly during power failures. They are flexible and can be easily installed inside or outside your home. With a wheelchair lift, the individual just has to pull his wheelchair to the lift platform and can automatically be lifted upward or downward with the help of switches.? Portable wheelchair lifts, platform wheelchair lifts and stair glides are the most widely used wheelchair lifts. These lifts can also be easily fitted into automobiles.

The features of the wheelchair lifts vary with the manufacturers. While buying a wheelchair lift, the user should take care to select the model fulfilling their requirements. They should ensure that the lift is compatible with their wheelchairs. The user can also look out for special features such as lowering and raising mechanisms or back-up lifting. The user should ideally seek professional advice about the technicalities of the lift before using it. The other important factors to be considered while buying a wheelchair lift are the maintenance cost and availability of spare parts. Most manufacturers provide free maintenance services. It would be better to go for the brand offering maintenance services.

They provide easy access between floors and porches to those using wheelchairs.

Many of us, even though we are gifted with the ability to do all our normal activities such as? walking, running and climbing, love to enjoy more comforts such as lifts, ramps and elevators. But there are many mentally vibrant people facing mobility problems due to their physical handicaps, along with problems of old age. These individuals spend a substantial part of their life in wheelchairs and cannot move about as freely as others. Today ramps and elevators are common in most public buildings; but there still exists the need for supplementary equipment such as vertical wheelchair lifts, to benefit physically challenged individuals.

One of the striking benefits of vertical wheelchair lifts or platform lifts is that these are designed in such a manner that a person in a wheelchair can be elevated or lowered between the floors without leaving the wheelchair. A vertical wheelchair lift is also powered by hydraulics or electricity. The different models of vertical wheelchair lifts are:

??Enclosed model??Shaft way model??Stage model??Opal model

In the Enclosed model, the wheelchair and the boarder can be placed on a platform which is enclosed with walls as the lift moves up and down. The Shaftway model can be used in residential as well as commercial environments and fixed to existing walls like an elevator. The Stage model featured with just a platform can be used for shorter heights or elevations. The Opal model, apart from its open ceiling, is almost similar to the Enclosed model.

Vertical wheelchair lifts or platform lifts can be used in various locations as in residences, and facilitates easy access between floors and porches to those using wheelchairs. In a scholastic environment, the major benefit of vertical wheelchair lifts is that these provide physically challenged individuals to easily negotiate all elevated platforms and lecture halls.

The excellent benefits of vertical wheelchair lifts help one lead a better activity oriented life, enjoying considerable independence. At home or the workplace, a vertical wheelchair lift can bring remarkable changes in the life of the physically challenged people.

W hen you try to buy a wheelchair van you may end up getting featherbrained listening to all of those cant the salesman just said. Well, here you can find some of them with a brief explanation. I hope this can help you get over that purchasing indecision and with much less headaches. These are not precisely “jargons” but some terms that has a high chance getting said over and over again by the wheelchair van salesmen.

1. Van conversion
No wheelchair van is originally a wheelchair van when it’s out of the factory. The vans are designed and manufactured as common passenger cars targeted at the mass market. A van conversion is the process where the van is customized with a wheelchair lift or a wheelchair ramp. The interior is also modified to provide easier access give more spacious room for the handicapped person riding on a wheelchair.

2. Hand Controls
When a disabled individual would like to drive the van then it will need an additional Hand Controls for easier riding. Since the feet won’t be able to hit the brake and the gas pedal then these two functions will be handled by hand with the new controls.

3. Kneeling system
With this arrangement the van really lower itself nearer to the ground - by means of air suspension - for easy loading. Air suspension is not a standard feature in most vans so the original suspension must be modified for this system. It is much easier for a person on a manual wheelchair to push their wheelchair up the ramp using this system. However, this system is tend to break easily so ask for this feature only if you truly need it.

4. ADA compliance
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides a design guide consisting key information about how to create accessible car and van spaces. When you purchase an ADA compliant van you can be sure it is of highest quality, contains the necessary accessories and follow the safety and accessibility standards.

5. Crash test
Converting a van is a big deal. Any kind of alteration made to the car will have an effect to it’s rigidity and safety. Even though the original van have passed a crash test the converted van may not have been crash proven before. Please, choose only from maker / vendor that has passed the crash test for their converted units

6. Post purchase resellers program
When you no longer need your accessible van you can take it back to the dealer and they will either buy it back from you ( at a reduced price ) or sell it for you for a small fee.

7. NMEDA
NMEDA stands for National Equipment Mobility Dealers Association. It’s job is to ensure quality and professionalism in the manufacturing and installation of safe and reliable mobility equipment in vehicles for drivers and passengers with disabilities.

That’s it. I hope that after reading this article your next visit to a wheelchair van dealer won’t be such a puzzling experience.

Wheelchairs come in many different shapes and sizes depending on one’s specific needs. However, choosing a child wheelchair can be tricky as there are many things you need to take in consideration; here are a few tips, which I hope will be of assistance when choosing a child wheelchair in the future.

Assessing The Child’s Specific Needs

Most importantly, when you buy a child wheelchair the specific needs of the individual child are of paramount significance. What is the child’s health? Does he or she need a lot of physical support? Or, is he or she very active? Each of these considerations will impact what type of chair is needed and what elements you include in the chair you buy.

For example, electric wheelchairs are very sophisticated. Not only are they powered by simply using a joystick or other device, but you can adjust things like seating position with the touch of a button. This is useful for a child, for example, who gets frequent pressure sores or needs to have seating adjusted frequently in order to remain comfortable. In addition, of course, the joystick feature for wheelchair operation is of paramount importance in order to give independence to a child who has limited mobility. On the other hand, for a child who has a lot of upper body mobility and does not need a lot of back or head support, a manual chair may be the best choice. Lightweight sport models are very maneuverable by hand, and can provide a very active child with the tools to participate fully in most physical activities, including sports. They are also very lightweight and easy to transport, unlike electric wheelchair models, which are heavy and cannot be easily folded and placed in a car trunk or backseat.

Use Caution When Purchasing A Powerful Child Wheelchair

Of course, price is probably not of the most importance when you consider what type of wheelchair best suits your child. Of greater importance is the fact it meets your child’s needs as fully as possible, while providing them the most mobility they can have. For children’s wheelchairs, keep in mind that if you need to purchase a power wheelchair, the motor should be significantly powerful enough to carry the child through his or her day at adequate speeds to keep up with his or her peers, such as when they are playing or running, and without having to recharge the battery more than once per day. On the other hand, make sure your child can adequately and safely manage the wheelchair so as not to injure him or herself, or others. Just like any powered vehicle, an electric wheelchair is not a toy, and must be managed prudently to avoid injury.

You should note that today, many wheelchairs come with the ability to grow and adapt as your child does. For example, you can start out with a chair that has lower speed controls and exchange them for more powerful ones as your child grows and can handle a more powerful wheelchair.

Purchasing A Child Wheelchair

As with any medical device, wheelchairs aren’t cheap, especially electric ones. Even manual chairs usually run approximately $2000, and electric ones are proportionately more expensive. However, if you’re not able to afford one, there are programs and/or financing available to help you purchase one that best fits your child needs regardless of financial status.

Contact a wheelchair manufactures or retailer and they will be more then happy to assist and walk you through any and all the formalities in order to get your child wheelchair as soon as possible.

Occasionally there is a short-term need for a wheel chair and they can be costly to purchase, even one that is used. This is when the option of wheelchair rental can come in handy. Being able to rent a wheel chair for a short time, many times the cost of which is covered by insurance, can help when recovering from an accident or illness.

Another advantage of a wheelchair rental is that if something goes wrong with the wheel chair you’re renting, it will be replaced at no extra cost with one that works. The medical supply company you’re working with should be very understanding if you need your unit replaced for whatever reason. There are several models to choose from, which is a great benefit for those who may be confined to a wheelchair for an extended period of time.

It would be a rare occasion when a chair rental would not be received in clean, working order and usually a simple phone call will get it replaced immediately, but most reputable equipment companies will not let that happen.

Keep Track Of Rates And Accessories

If you’re renting a wheelchair, you should also be able to rent other things you need temporarily, such as carrying totes or arms totes. Some companies will supply them free of additional charge as a perk to customers. Other companies may charge extra for their use, and you should check this out before you read from a particular company, depending on what your insurance will cover.

Another benefit of wheel chair rental is there is usually no charge for pick up or delivery. You call and arrange for its delivery and at the end of the rental period, they will return and pick it up. You would also have the option to extend the rental period if needed.

There are many types of wheel chair rental units available with manual types as well as the powered wheel chairs, and some companies are willing to rent you a power wheel chair for you to try in hopes that you will decide to buy one. Being able to use a power chair, even on a temporary basis, can help the user see the benefits of not depending on the manual type for mobility.

Of course, “try before you buy,” or in this case, rent. You’ll need to see if the chair you chose fits through all spaces in your house and allows you to maneuver well. The rental company will likely have ideas for you if the one you chose does not fit, and they can bring you back one that does better.

Many kinds of wheelchairs are available for those who require them. They are designed to aid people with different combinations of medical conditions, so examine them closely to ensure that the wheelchair you purchase suits your needs. Motorized wheelchairs provide the advantage of electric motors, and thus can be used by many people who may not be able to operate a manual wheelchair due to their diminished physical capacities.

Manual wheelchairs must be operated by the person using them. One way or another, the user provides the force to propel himself. However, not everybody is able to do this. Some wheelchair users have arm or leg problems and simply do not have the strength or ability to operate a manual wheelchair. They are better advised to use a motorized wheelchair instead.

“Powerchairs” are so-called because they are powered by electric motors. The operator uses a control device such as a joystick, or one of various other methods, to “drive” the chair. The chair will operate both indoors and outdoors, and can be customized with many various options for comfort and ease of use.

Motorized wheelchairs, due to their greater complexity, will generally cost more than the manual variety. However, if you have a condition that limits your ability to use a manual wheelchair, check with your insurance agency. You may find that powerchairs are covered under your policy. Even if it is not covered, a wheelchair is usually a one-time purchase, so the cost is not as daunting as it may appear at first glance.

One should buy wheelchair parts or accessories at the same time as purchasing the device. A portable wheelchair ramp is among the most valuable of accessories. When one is stuck in a location difficult to maneuver, or completely without access portable wheelchair ramps make things much simpler. Other replacement wheelchair parts such as batteries or motors should be available from the retailer and are quite useful.

When deciding which wheelchair to buy, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a long-term investment in a piece of equipment that you may be using for a long time: be very careful to choose one that you’ll be happy with. For both manual and motorized wheelchairs, comfort and convenience are paramount; spending your money wisely now will likely save you both money and difficulties in the long run.

Wheelchair ramps have improved a lot in recent years. Now, they’re much more versatile and you have a lot more to choose from. You should have little problem finding just what you need. When you choose a wheelchair ramp, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to make the best choice for you, including your present physical health.

Choosing The Right Material For Your Wheelchair Ramp

There are an almost endless variety of wheelchair ramps available, constructed from a variety of materials, and it should be pretty easy to find one that meets your needs. For example, if you need a wheelchair ramp to get into your house, it should be sturdy and weatherproof. A good choice for this might be a mixed alloy aluminum wheelchair ramp. It’s sturdy enough for everyday use and won’t rust.

Aluminum wheelchair ramps are a very popular choice because they are light and easy to maneuver however, aluminum by itself is very soft and therefore it needs to be mixed with other materials in order to be durable as well.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Aluminum Wheelchair Ramps

The advantages of the aluminum wheelchair ramps is the fact that they are light and that makes it possible for the person using it to do all the maintenance required for it without assistance at times; it also makes it possible to move it with it either by the one using the wheelchair or by the one pushing it.

Aluminum wheelchair ramps are also easy to lift because of their lightweight and the one using the wheelchair can do so with ease if the present health permits him or her. However, the biggest disadvantage of an aluminum wheelchair ramp is the fact that it is easily damaged because this alloy is soft and too flexible at times.

The good news is that aluminum can be mixed with other alloys in order to strengthen so it is not easily breakable without loosing its main quality and that is its lightweight. Therefore choose a wheelchair made of aluminum as you will enjoy its advantages and never even know of the disadvantages.

Custom Made Wheelchair Ramps

Because different wheelchair ramp users need different things, wheelchair ramps can be custom made to the needs of the particular user. You can make your wheelchair ramp out of whatever material you choose, as long as you keep in mind what the wheelchair user’s needs are and what the ramp’s usage will be. If it is going to be used a lot, as is probably the case, then a sturdy but lightweight material such as an aluminum alloy would be a good choice. For the best results, contact a wheelchair ramp manufacturer or dealer and have him or her show you what choices you may have. As experts in the field, he or she will know what material and specifications will be perfect to meet your needs.

Archery is a sport that is open to athletes even with a physical disability. Even though this sport is very physically demanding, it is one sport that disabled athletes can compete on an equal basis with able-bodied people. In fact wheelchair target archery has been a Paralympic sport for more than 30 years, and still going strong.

There are of course, specific rules relating to wheelchair competitors. However all other rules of competition are the same with able-bodied target archery. The difference is that wheelchair archers are divided into 2 different classes whereas there are other classifications for standing archers. Wheelchair archers compete in either W1 for quadriplegic archers that allow them to use a release mechanism, or W2 which is open to all wheelchair archers. In recent years, wheelchair archery is becoming an increasingly popular sport for the wheelchair bound athletes.

For many disabled individuals, wheelchair archery does not require any special accessories like a sports wheelchair. However, some people prefer to remove the armrest to improve aim. For others, a recurve 48-inch bow is recommended because the bow is lighter and easier to control. For persons with little arm strength, devices to help hold the bow may be allowed. Quadriplegics may have an assistant to help place the arrow in the bow, but verbal advice is against the rules.

Although outsiders may initially think the rules should be more lenient for the disabled, people participating in wheelchair archery appreciate the opportunity to be treated as another other sportsperson. The thrill of competing, participating in sports, and healthy exercise should not be diminished. Wheelchair archery provides an enjoyable diversion from the frustrating challenges of living a disabled life. For a time, wheelchair archery levels the playing field, and the handicapped are vital and alive, like everyone else.

Wheelchair archery is not simply a sport to the wheelchair bound athletes; wheelchair archery is also a chance to be normal, a boost in self-esteem, an opportunity to get some much-needed exercise, and an activity to add adventure to the restrictive life of the disabled. Instead of sitting on the sidelines and always cheering on other athletes, wheelchair target archery allows the physically challenged unique occasions to hear cheers from the benches.

In summary, live life to the fullest, despite physically handicapped. Wheelchair archery is an excellent competitive sport for anyone, regardless of ability, especially if you are up for a challenge.
